If you're a parent who has spent years feeling like you were fighting your kid's phone alone, you weren't imagining it. Wednesday's $17 billion settlement between Meta and 47 states stems from allegations that the company knew about the harm its platforms could cause teens, especially around mental health and body image, and didn't act. This doesn't undo that harm, but it's an acknowledgment. Your instincts as a parent were right. At Caminar, we've sat with hundreds of Bay Area families navigating this exact struggle.

Some concrete changes are coming from the Meta settlement, including default daily time limits, nighttime-use blocks, stronger parental-supervision tools, and age-verification measures. While this is a big step, real protection for kids won't be complete until Congress mandates changes across all platforms.

Part of the Meta settlement is also earmarked for youth mental health programs, such as after-school activities, digital literacy counseling, and more. This is exactly the kind of investment our communities need.

In the meantime, please keep having conversations at home. The settlement and ensuing changes do not replace you, or the support your family might need along the way.

If you or your teen is struggling with screen time, mood, sleep, or other stressors right now, you don't have to wait for policy to catch up. At Caminar, we have spent over 60 years providing evidence-based, whole-person mental health care to youth and families. Caminar’s new Teen and Family Wellness Center - Palo Alto offers teens a place to work through the pressures of growing up in a stressful and hyperconnected world, with sliding-scale fee options for those who qualify.
