For many people, estate planning begins with practical considerations, such as caring for loved ones, documenting wishes, and preparing for the future.

But estate planning can also be an opportunity to reflect on something deeper. The values that have shaped your life can help guide decisions about the legacy you hope to leave behind.

A meaningful legacy is rarely measured by the size of an estate. At the heart, it is about the people and values that matter most.

Knowing where to start is often the most challenging part of the process. Fortunately, the best starting point costs nothing. It simply requires setting aside a few moments to reflect on what has mattered most throughout your life and what impact you’d like that story to continue having in the future.

Beginning with What Matters Most

One of the most powerful questions in philanthropy is simple:

What matters most to you, and why?

What life experiences shaped your values? What issues have captured your heart? What kind of change in the world would you like to see continued beyond your lifetime?

For many, these reflections naturally lead to thinking about organizations that have shaped their communities or touched their lives. Has Caminar been a part of your story, a loved one's story, or the story of someone in your community? Have you witnessed the impact that compassionate, whole-person care can make in the lives of individuals and their families?

These questions can help transform estate planning from a financial exercise into a more meaningful reflection on purpose, legacy, and the difference you hope to make in this world.

Conversations Today to Ease Stress Tomorrow

Many families avoid discussing estate plans because the topic feels uncomfortable or overwhelming.  Yet these conversations can help reduce confusion later while helping loved ones understand the values behind your decisions.

Consider family discussion questions such as:

  • Are our wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations up to date?
  • Have we documented our wishes clearly?
  • What values do we hope to pass on to future generations?
  • What causes or organizations have been meaningful to our family?

These conversations are more about family, purpose, and legacy than finances. They offer an opportunity to share not only what you value, but why those values matter to you.

Including Giving in Your Legacy

You may consider choosing to include charitable giving as part of your estate plan through a will, trust, retirement account, donor-advised fund, life insurance policy, or other giving vehicle.

For supporters of Caminar, these gifts help sustain programs that provide mental health care, housing support, substance use recovery services, and whole-person care for individuals and families throughout our community.

A planned gift, regardless of size, can help ensure that future generations continue to have access to the services and support that create hope, healing, and stability. It is one more way to turn personal values into lasting impact.

If you are reviewing your estate plan and are interested in learning more about including a charitable gift to Caminar, we’d love to hear from you.
